Investment in games venues of the Toronto 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games

The Government of Canada’s investment of up to $500M for the Games includes up to $377.1M allocated to the construction of new sport facilities and the renovation of others for the Games and for the use of the citizens of, and visitors to, Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe for many years to come.

New construction

CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House
Federal
Investment:
  • The Government of Canada contributed $114.9M of the $205.1M total budget for the Aquatic Centre and Field House.
  • The facility includes:
    • an Aquatics Centre featuring two internationally sanctioned long course 10-lane, 50-metre pools (including bulkheads); a 5-metre deep diving tank with 3-metre, 5-metre, 7.5-metre and 10-metre platforms; and dry-land training facilities;
    • a Field House featuring flexible gymnasium space for training and competition with an indoor recreational track and fitness area including cardio and weightlifting facilities;
    • a Canadian Sport Institute Ontario complex that will provide sport performance services and coaching and training facilities. Students, high-performance athletes, sporting groups and the community will have access to the multipurpose facility after the Games.

This facility will also receive support through the Toronto2015 Sport Legacy Fund.

  • Located at the site of the former Ivor Wynne stadium, the facility will host Pan Am soccer matches during the 2015 Games.
  • The stadium project includes the demolition of the existing stadium, as well as the construction of new grand stands, a new field of play and site development. It includes such amenities as luxury suites, club seats, concession and other patron amenities, press and broadcasting facilities and multipurpose space to support the Games and leave a lasting legacy.

Cisco Milton Pan Am / Parapan Am Velodrome
Federal Investment:
  • The Government of Canada contributed up to $38.4M of the $56M total budget for the Velodrome.
  • The Velodrome is designed to be a Category 1 indoor 250m timber track in accordance with all Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) regulations and specifications. The Velodrome also includes an infield area that can support other recreational activities such as basketball and volleyball, following the Games.

This facility will also receive support through the Toronto2015 Sport Legacy Fund.

  • The new fields will house two new International Hockey Federation (FIH) certified field hockey pitches at the University of Toronto’s downtown St. George campus. This premier venue will have the ability to host all levels of the game, from local to international.  During the 2015 Games, the facility will play host to the men’s and women’s field hockey competition as well as Parapan Football and seat approximately 2,000 spectators.
  • Following the Games the synthetic fields will have multiple uses and contribute to the existing sports facilities on campus.

  • The Etobicoke Olympium is being renovated and improved to be used as a training site for aquatics disciplines. Renovations of this facility include improvements to the existing Olympic size pool and dive towers, common area lobby and administration areas as well as replacement of major mechanical, electrical and life safety systems. It is a multisport facility that includes an Olympic-sized pool, a leisure pool, gymnasium and fitness centre.
  • Following the Games, local residents will have access to much-improved facilities.

  • Improvements include the widening of the canal to accommodate lane space and meet all International Canoe Federation (ICF) standards, as well as the addition of buildings along the course, to make Welland a world class Canoe/Kayak sprint facility. One building serves as doping control, ceremonies, competition management, timing and scoring, technical delegates/officials, and judges offices, and another building includes a four-season multipurpose training tank, athlete washrooms and change rooms, off-season storage, the athlete’s servery and offices.

  • The Government of Canada contributed up to $3.5M to a total renovation cost of $6.3M for the three facilities.
  • Federal funding is contributing to the replacement of existing tracks at Centennial Park, Birchmount Stadium and the Toronto Track and Field Centre (TTFC); these tracks will serve as the training and warm‐up venues for Athletics during the Games. TTFC will have two track replacements ‐ one indoor track and one outdoor track, while Birchmount and Centennial will each have their outdoor tracks replaced. The TTFC – outdoor facility will be the warm‐up track for competition, as it is adjacent to the competition facility, the Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium which is also located on the York University campus.
