Online survey results

From March 2–10, 2017, the Government of Canada posted a survey asking Canadians to share their thoughts on the design concepts proposed by the following five finalist teams.

Visitors approach clusters of slender bronze columns illuminated at night.

Team Mills

Team Moskaliuk

Two long curving walls made of bronze rods densely arranged in angled rows stand side-by-side.

Team Raff

Team Reich+Petch Architects

A total of 717 valid surveys were analyzed. In cases where multiple surveys were submitted from the same IP address and were deemed to be overly similar, all but one survey was removed.

Question 1

The design must creatively embody the commemorative vision of the Memorial: to honour all victims of communism by bringing their suffering into the public’s consciousness, with an emphasis on the experience of the millions of Canadians who have been affected by communism, and pay tribute to Canada’s role as a land of refuge for those fleeing injustice and persecution from around the world.

Taking the Memorial vision into consideration, enter up to 3 adjectives that describe your impressions of each design.

Note: The data was reviewed to ensure that respondents provided three different adjectives, rather than the same adjective three times. In cases where respondents provided the same adjective three times, the adjective was only counted once.

A total of 6640 English and 215 French words were entered for the five teams. The results for both languages were translated and combined. Only adjectives used 5 or more times are included in the word clouds.

Question 2

The Memorial will serve as a powerful place of meaning and catalyst for discussion. It will invite visitors to commemorate and learn more about tragedies that others—including, for many Canadians, their own ancestors—endured under communist regimes worldwide. At the same time, the Memorial will remind visitors of Canada’s commitment to freedom, democracy and human rights.

To achieve these objectives, the Memorial design needs to perform several functions. Which designs do you think meet the following criteria?

Note: Results from all 717 valid surveys are included. Respondents were allowed to select more than one design per criteria such that the total number of responses for each criteria is greater than the number of respondents.

Question 3

Please provide any additional comments that you would like to share about any of the proposed designs (max. 200 words per response).

Replies were coded as follows:

A regionally and linguistically representative sample of 500 valid surveys were analysed from the overall 717 responses received (the cases drawn were representative of the respondent population, not the Canadian population).  The sample provides a margin-of-error of +/-2.41%, 19 times out of 20.
